Software Engineer Resume Examples & Templates (2026)
A software engineer resume has two audiences: an ATS keyword filter and an engineering manager who spends about 30 seconds deciding whether to keep reading. The winning formula is boring on purpose — a clean layout, a skills section that names your real stack, and experience bullets that lead with shipped outcomes (latency cut, revenue enabled, incidents reduced) rather than technologies alone. Projects and open source count, but only when framed with impact. The example below shows the structure that consistently gets interviews; swap in your own stack and wins.

How to write a software engineer resume: 5 rules that matter
1Lead every bullet with the outcome, not the tech
"Cut checkout API p95 latency 42% by introducing Redis caching" beats "Used Redis for caching." The stack is the supporting detail; the business or performance result is the headline.
2Name your stack explicitly for the ATS
Recruiters search for exact terms: React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes. Put a skills section near the top with the technologies you would genuinely accept an interview question about.
3Show scale wherever you can
Requests per second, users served, data volume, team size, services owned. Scale signals level: "maintained a service" reads junior, "owned a service handling 30M requests/day" reads senior.
4Side projects earn their place with users or stars
One shipped project with real users beats five tutorials. Link it, one line on what it does, one metric (downloads, stars, MRR). Cut the rest.
5Keep it to one page for under 10 years of experience
Engineering managers skim. One tight page with your best 8–12 bullets outperforms two pages of everything you have ever touched.
Achievement phrases for software engineers
These (and more) are one click away inside the editor's phrase bank:

- «Shipped a customer-facing feature used by 80,000+ monthly active users»
- «Reduced production incidents by 30% by adding end-to-end tests and CI quality gates»
- «Owned a microservice handling 30M requests/day with 99.95% uptime»
Software Engineer resume FAQ
Should I put my GitHub on my resume?
Yes, if it shows real work — shipped projects, meaningful commits, or open-source contributions. An empty profile is worse than none. Put the link next to your email and make sure your pinned repos are the ones you want judged.
How do I list technologies I've only used a little?
Split your skills into levels or keep only what you can interview on. Listing a technology invites questions about it; "familiar with" tiers protect you while still passing keyword filters.
Do software engineers need a summary section?
A 2–3 line summary helps when it positions you: years of experience, domain (fintech, infra, mobile), and one headline achievement. Skip generic adjectives — "passionate team player" filters no one.
How technical should my resume be for startups vs big tech?
Big-tech ATS pipelines reward exact keywords and standard formatting. Startups read for shipped product and ownership. The same resume works for both if every bullet pairs a technology with a shipped outcome.
